Thirteen sensor boxes measure the air quality before and after the opening of the Verapaz bridge

Since January 2025, thirteen sensor boxes have been measuring the air quality in the Sluizeken-Tolhuis-Ham neighborhood in Ghent. The goal is to monitor air quality in real time and map any differences before and after the opening of the new Verapaz bridge.

The sensor boxes, spread throughout the neighborhood, continuously measure the concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a harmful substance that comes mainly from traffic. The Verapaz bridge, which opens mid-July, will drastically change the flow of traffic in the area. The measurements should reveal the impact this change will have on air quality in the neighborhood.

Citizens can consult the measurement via the data portal of the Flanders Environment Agency. The final results are expected in a year.

Earlier, in 2024, similar measurements were conducted in the Dampoort and Oud-Gentbrugge area, as part of the introduction of the mobility plan. These results will be available soon.
